Travel to New Zealand has never been easier. A few years ago such a journey required a lot of courage and a lot of energy in finding information. And I will not even mention the time before Google.
There is a program called Working Holiday Scheme, which you can take part of if you meet basic requirements. It is program for young people (the age restriction depends on your country of origin) which allows them to stay and work in New Zealand for 12 months (with some possibility to extend the stay). This is the way how to enjoy the Middle-earth with minimum costs and even make and save some extra money. You will have time of your life and everybody will be jealous.
